What Is Beauty?

beauty

Beauty is a multi-faceted concept that involves aspects of science, technology, and psychology. It can be measured in terms of physical attributes, such as skin texture, colour, and size, or it can be measured in terms of aesthetic or social importance, such as self-esteem or social acceptance. Generally, defining beauty is a difficult task.

A more encompassing definition of beauty could include aspects of gender, race, age, or even popular culture. The classical cult of beauty has been exploited in countless ways to gain power and control. During the Baroque era, Renaissance artists like Rubens were asked to portray roly poly fleshy bodies. Similarly, in the modern era, people have been willing to alter their appearance to please others. Depending on the context, it can be argued that the most beautiful thing about beauty is the ability to be perceived as such.

Despite the fact that there is no universal standard of beauty, there are several criteria that have been found to be the most important. One of these is the presence of the triumvirate of symmetry, symmetry of body parts, and symmetry of body parts in relation to the torso. All three of these qualities provide an overall perception of beauty.

Unlike many of the most important functions of nature, the most important function of beauty has been subverted in many ways. For example, the most effective way of advertising beauty products is by using an insecure consumer base. This has led to a proliferation of sleazy and risqué beauty ad campaigns.

Another aspect of beauty is the use of the “so-called” sexiest hairstyle, makeup, or hair color. These elements have been used as a means of increasing a person’s social status, especially in the United States. However, achieving a standard of beauty is risky and can have adverse consequences for one’s health.

In the field of beauty, there are several other factors to consider, such as social class, the media, and the aesthetics of the product itself. As a result, attempting to create an equitable ecosystem in the industry is no small feat. Fortunately, the industry has started to change for the better. Some of these changes involve better support for Black brands and more investment in research into Black consumers. Other changes include increased visibility of Black entrepreneurs in the industry.

In addition to the changes mentioned above, one major point to remember is that equity is a long-term effort. While the aforementioned changes can be temporary or even permanent, addressing the major pain points of the Black consumer and their industry can lead to a fundamental transformation. Even small improvements can have a large economic payoff.

Considering that 41 million Americans have increasing spending power, there is plenty of room for improvement. Perhaps the most obvious is to promote and advocate for equitable distribution of Black-focused products in retail stores. There are also more opportunities for Black entrepreneurs to step up and innovate with their own brand of beauty products.
